The Charles Reynolds Foundation presented a check to disAbility Cornwall on February 25th, 2022, to enable the smooth running of the 'Have a Go Days', which are free multisport activities for children aged 6-18 with additional needs or disability.
Cornwall is one of the most deprived areas in the United Kingdom. In 2020, children accounted for 26.3 percent of the population in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, research indicates the disease burden is increasing in Cornwall at a faster rate than England as a whole (Cornwall.gov.uk. 2022). Physical inactivity is a huge risk factor that can increase individuals’ susceptibility to disability therefore it is important to ensure we can provide the facilities to cater for children with disabilities in Cornwall.
Disability Cornwall are ‘a values based, user-led charitable company with a mission to represent, include, support, and empower people living with a long-term health condition or disability, their families, and carers in Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly. We also support community organisations and businesses to develop more inclusive approaches to meeting the needs of their clients and customers’ (disAbility Cornwall & Isles of Scilly, 2022).
Fiona commented “It was such a pleasure and privilege to be involved with this very worthwhile cause. So many children benefit by increasing in self-confidence and wellbeing by integrating in fun activities together. The team, including coach Mike Shilton (son of the legendary footballed Peter Shilton) provide such positive energy and enthusiasm and join in celebrating what the children are able to achieve in a fun packed environment”
